Tea tree oil also knows as melaleuca oil is among one of the most popular essential oils. It is well known for its powerful antiseptic properties and the ability to treat wounds. Therefore, this native plant from Australia for the past 100 years has been widely and traditionally used as a topical antiseptic and antifungal treatment. Today, the science is finally catching up and describing why it is so effective.

So, here are five tea tree oil uses that will actually make you see results with your own eyes.

Acne

Acnes usually occur when the hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells. But, the real question here is how can the essential tea tree oil help to get rid of it.

Customarily, benzoyl peroxide is used to prevent the pores from getting blocked by targeting the bacteria that cause acne. A study found that tea tree oil works as good as benzoyl peroxide in controlling the symptoms of acne. So, apply a few drops of essential tea tree oil on the affected area with a cotton ball. Dilute it with water, if required and then apply. Leave it on for 3-4 hour or overnight and repeat regularly.

Fungal infections

Tea tree essential oil is one of the most powerful disinfectants that can be used as a herbal remedy to cure fungal skin infections. It has been specifically found to be very effective as a treatment to clear up toenail fungal infection. This condition is usually notoriously resistant to treatment, even with strong systematic antibiotics.

So, apply the tea tree essential oil on the affected area two to three times a day. In a similar manner, it is also very much effective as a topical treatment for athlete's foot, ringworm and jock itch infection.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is defined as a chronic skin problem which occurs when the dead skin cells begin to build up on the surface of the skin as thick dry scales or itchy patches.
Though there is no complete cure for this one skin problem, but tea tree oil has amazing properties to reduce the intensity of psoriasis on the body.

Just mix a few drops of tea tree oil with water and apply it on the affected area. Allow it to stay  overnight. Next morning wash it off, pat dry the skin and apply some moisturizer. Olive oil and other carrier oils too can be used alone with water to prevent the skin dryness.

Herpes

Herpes is a viral infection caused by one of the two types of herpes simplex virus. In a research, it was found that tea tree essential oil was having a significant antiviral activity which helped to inactivate the herpes virus very efficiently.

Thus, it can be used topically across the mouth and genitals, but it may initially cause discomfort. To avoid the irritation do make sure to dilute the essential tea tree oil with extreme care. With the help of a cotton swab, apply it to the affected region.

Dandruff

Dandruff basically starts with sebum, an oil produced by the body to keep hair and the skin healthy by forming a protective barrier. But, an excessive production of sebum is what leads to not just only dandruff but also acne.

To get rid of all scalp problems tea tree oil is said to be one of the best remedies. Being antifungal in nature, it kills the bacteria that cause overproduction of the skin cells. It can be used either by mixing 1 drop of oil per 3 ml of shampoo or by simply mixing 5 drops of tea tree essential oil with 1tbsp of olive oil in order to apply it directly.

Essential oil toiletries such as tea tree oil soap or tea tree oil shampoo make a good alternative for those who cannot take time out for regular, manual application, unless otherwise the natural form is the best.
