Winter can be tough for a lot of people. With the skies turning dark and the cold and snow, being able to get outside and in the sun can be difficult. Because of this, there are a number of people that can become prone to depression during the winter months. One way to help combat this is to get a dog. Dogs not only provide companionship, but can help to keep you from feeling depressed and isolated during the winter.

Finding the right dog, however, can be a bit more difficult, especially if you suffer from allergies. If you’re looking for the perfect pup, then consider a Yorkie.

The Yorkshire Terrier or a Yorkie are not only sweet, and compact little dogs, but they are also considered to be hypoallergenic, which can help to keep your allergies at bay. Here are some reasons to consider making a Yorkie a new addition to your home.

Hypoallergenic- Despite their long, sleek coats, Yorkies don’t actually shed a lot. Not only is this great news for people who suffer from allergies, but it also cuts down on the cleaning time when you break out the vacuum.

Smaller Size- Yorkies make a great dog for apartments because they’re smaller size. Considered part of the toy breed of dogs, Yorkies are a great fit for smaller homes, where a larger breed might be too cumbersome.

Great For Older People- Because of their size, Yorkies are a bit more fragile than other dogs, which makes them not a great choice for families with young children. Older people, on the other hand, can do great with a Yorkie as they don’t have to worry about the dog pulling or knocking them over, which can happen with larger breeds of dogs.

Things to Be aware of When Getting a Yorkie

Yorkies are part of the Toy Breed, which means they are small and compact, as well as fragile. Because of this, Yorkies aren’t a great match for young children. It’s also important to note that Yorkies are also part Terrier. Terrier breeds can be prone to excitability, and are all too happy to let you know if someone is at the door. Because of this, training your Yorkie is very important, otherwise you (and your neighbors) might find the shrill bark more than a little annoying. Yorkies also have long coats, which will require a bit of extra grooming to keep it from becoming tangled and matted.

Still, with the right training, Yorkies make for a wonderful addition to your home, especially if you suffer from allergies.

If you’re looking for a small dog with a lot of personality that won’t agitate your allergies, then a Yorkie might be the perfect fit for you and your family. With the right training and socialization,
Yorkies are a perfect companion, especially during the cold winter months. So when the snow starts to fall and the temperatures drop, it’s a perfect time to grab your favorite book and cuddle up on the couch with your favorite pup. Let your Yorkie help chase away the winter blues, without all the shedding that comes with owning a dog.
