People who daily consume foods rich in potassium,
suffer less from brain stroke.Every 1000mg(1g)of excess potassium per day reduces the risk of stroke by 11% in the next 5 to 14 years.

Swedish Karolinska Institutet researchers analyzed ten international studies involving more than 200,000 volunteers and concluded that potassium is very important in the prevention of brain stroke.

Potassium is,in addition to sodium,an electrolyte needed for maintaining water balance. It is necessary for the central nervous system, muscles, regulates blood pressure and sugar metabolism.A lack of potassium in the body is manifested by muscle weakness, abdominal distension, urinary disorders, irregular heart action, cardiac and psychiatric disorders.

The most important thing is that potassium lowers the occurrence of ischemic stroke, which is 80 % of all brain strokes.Ischemic stroke causes some blockage of the arteries that nourish the brain.Other strokes are the result of bleeding in the brain(hemorrhagic stroke). Besides that the potassium helps to eliminate the salt(table salt)from the body.

Potassium is found in dried fruits, especially peaches, apricots, grapes and plums, baked potatoes, melons, nuts, legumes, seafood, swiss chard, tomato juice, low fat yogurt, banana and yeast.

Adults should have an intake of 2300mg of potassium per day.Persons older than 50 years, those who suffer from high blood pressure, diabetes and renal failure should limit the intake to 1500 mg of potassium per day.

It is important to know

Dark peaches contain more potassium.
Potassium reduces the risk of stroke(brain stroke)at people with high blood pressure .
Potassium increases the elasticity of blood vessels and reduces their damage in a sudden jump of the blood pressure.
Foods rich in potassium can lower blood pressure.
Salty foods significantly increase blood pressure if there is a lack of potassium in the body.
The vegetarians eat more potassium and less frequently suffer from high blood pressure.
