The body changes as it ages. However, before you consider cosmetic surgery, consider other options. Often, simply making a few non-surgical changes can cause noticeable improvement in your appearance.

Care for Your Teeth

A wonderful smile makes you look younger and more attractive. Most people understand the importance of brushing the teeth, but it is easy to get in a hurry and not brush long enough. Use a soft-bristled brush to avoid damaging gums, and brush your teeth for at least the length of time it takes to hum the “Happy Birthday” song. Even if you brush regularly, teeth can stain over time. To make your teeth look their brightest and best, consider professional teeth whitening, say the experts at the Art of Dentistry Institute. The results of this are better, and often safer, than doing it at home.

Maintain an Exceptional Diet

There is a lot of truth to the phrase, “You are what you eat,” and your diet can affect your appearance. Poor nutrition leaves skin and hair vulnerable to many problems. Your skin may appear lackluster and is more prone to the effects of age. Hair can become dry and brittle, or even begin to fall out, if your diet is nutritionally lacking. Make sure to eat foods high in Omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, and get enough protein so that your hair continues to grow. Foods rich in antioxidants, vitamin A and vitamin E help the skin. Incorporate more carrots, sweet potatoes, leafy greens, tomato juice, nuts and seeds into your diet.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking enough water is very important for healthy skin. It helps avoid dryness that causes unsightly flaking and staying hydrated can reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Try lemon water for even better results. Lemon contains antioxidants and it is detoxifying, so both your skin and your hair will be healthier.

Caring for Your Skin

Avoid harsh soaps and too much sunlight, which dry the skin out and leave it susceptible to damage. When you apply moisturizer, do so when skin is still damp after your shower and it will be more easily absorbed. Exfoliatingremoves dead skin cells and can encourage collagen production. Don’t scrub your skin too hard, however, or you can cause damage or encourage adult acne. Daily gentle exfoliation is all that is required, in most cases.

Caring for Your Hair

Hair is easily damaged if you use the wrong hair products. Avoid anything containing alcohol, as this strips hair of vital oils. Condition your hair on occasion with natural products, such as olive oil treatments, and avoid over-shampooing. Most people do not need to shampoo every day, and doing so also strips the hair of important oils. Instead, shampoo every other day and avoid other damaging activities, such as using hot curling irons.

By staying as healthy as possible, you will improve how you look. You may not notice immediate results, but in as little as a few weeks, you will begin to notice positive changes. Unlike surgery, many of these changes benefit your whole body and at much less cost or risk.
