Blackberry,curative with its every part, root, leaf flowers and fruits, occupies an important place in human nutrition and traditional medicine.

 

Rich in organic iron, blackberry has become irreplaceable in the diet of children, pregnant women, nursing mothers, and people in puberty and climacterium, while the juice of blackberries helps the liver. Known since ancient times and its usage in medicine is found in many historical writings.
Blackberries in the fruit contains very little carbohydrate(6%), protein 0.9 % and 1 % fat with a higher percentage of dry matter( 20%).Of minerals it contains potassium,calcium,phosphorus,magnesium and iron.Among the most common are the vitamins B1,B2,C and PP, while beta-carotene is less.Among other important medicinal ingredients galotanin is found in a higher percentage(8 %)inozit and organic acids.The leaves contain pectin,and while fresh,a considerable amount of vitamin C.
 

The phenolic compounds,which are found in the blackberry,prevent the oxidation of LDL cholesterol,the so-called bad cholesterol,which delays the onset of atherosclerosis and prevents the occurrence of cardiovascular disease,including myocardial infarction and syllables most common causes of death in the balkans.In the prevention of cardiovascular disease blackberry participates with its content of vitamin C and beta carotene,due to their antioxidant properties.Due to the high content of potassium and low sodium,blackberry is useful for the patients with hypertension,as it affects the reduction of pressure.
 

Blackberries in folk medicine are used to treat diarrhea.It is particularly effective at children,and is applied in the form of syrup.The blackberry fruit acts mildly laxative.Blackberry is used in the treatment of hemorrhoids and various violations of the skin and mucous membranes.

 

Externally, it is used as an antiseptic in the treatment of angina, pharyngitis, gingivitis, for wounds and skin diseases, as well as a mouthwash in case of inflammation of mucous membranes. Often is used for colds,coughs and diabetes. For diabetics, it reduces damage to the blood vessels.
 

In the folk medicine for centuries are known the medicinal properties of blackberry wine obtained by natural fermentation of ripe blackberries.Blackberry wine has its own medical justification, and in pharmacology is classified as medicinal.There is evidence that quercetin,an ingredient found in blackberry wine prevents cancer (magazine " Weine and Spiritus " No. 29 of 1995 ) and slows aging.It is recommended for anemia,poor nutrition,to regulate digestion,lowering blood pressure and improving blood circulation.



Blackberry fruits are widely used in household,for the preparation of various foods (sweet , jam, marmalade and juice).

Blackberry because of its beneficial effect deserves to occupy a place in the diet and not only to be used as a remedy when the disease occurs,but even more,to be used preventively,ie to prevent anemia,heart disease,cancer and to boost immunity.
