It's no secret that yogurt with probiotic cultures, improves digestion. However, according to a recent research, sour products help in the treatment of depression, according to Live Science.

It has been shown that the intestinal bacteria directly affects the brain. It shows an experiment made on rodents. According to scientists the same happens in the human organism. Even earlier intestinal diseases were linked with stress and mental health problems. This gave the scientists a reason for further research.

Laboratory rats were feed with food that contained Lactobacillus rhamnosus JB-1, which are normal inhabitants of the digestive system. These rats showed fewer signs of stress, anxiety and depression. They had lower levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, even when placed in a stressful situation.

John Krian,a neurologist, from the University College Cork in Ireland, said:"In principle, in the future, yogurt can be used instead of tablets, but the effectiveness depends on the strain of bacteria."

This means that not all sour products are equally effective. This conclusion is articulated in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences).
