Do you want to snack on something useful? Eat popcorn. Recent research has shown that these snacks contain more antioxidants ( polyphenols ) than any other vegetables and fruits.

A portion of popcorn contains 300mg of polyphenols. By comparison in the same quantity of sweet corn has 114mg and 160mg in any fruit. This is due to significantly lower water content in popcorn than in the fruits : polyphenols are dissolved in water, where fruits and vegetables contain up to 90 % of water, while polyphenols in popcorn with less than 4 % of the water are more concentric, according to a March 25 meeting of the American Chemical society in San Diego.

The average American diet of fruit recommends 255mg daily and 218mg of polyphenols from vegetables. Popcorn would provide a significant part of the daily needs of polyphenols, the researchers from Pennsylvania point out.

Previously it was thought that the popcorn does not have much of the polyphenols. Now we know that they have more than the nuts and 15 times more than the corn chips.

Furthermore it is proved that the bigger part of the polyphenols and fiber is found in the shells of the popcorn which get stuck in your teeth. The shells deserve lot more respect than they get. But beware: if you add a lot of salt, oil, or other high - calorie supplements,
instead of healthy foods you will receive "a bowl full of problems."

If popcorn is prepared only under the influence of warm air, it contains a minimum of calories, but if it is prepared with the addition of oil the calorific value is doubled. Such popcorn contains a minimum of 43 % fat.

Regardless of popcorn do not forget the fruits and vegetables. The popcorn has no vitamins and substances which is rich in fruits and vegetables, which are also beneficial to health.

Popcorn - a unique integrated product for a snack. It's 100% whole grain, which can not be said for other products. They are obtained by mixing whole grain with the other ingredients. If the product is called integral it just means that it contains no more than 51 % of  the whole grain.

One portion of popcorn provides 70% of the daily requirement of whole grains. The average person eats only half of the recommended daily requirements, and popcorn can fill that empty space.

The study was funded by the university, with no financial impact to the food industry, even though the review of the professional journals research is treated as preliminary.
